Please do not jump into a conversation without understanding what is going on. I was refering to Scranton-boy's feelings that people mock his city and that Scranton is the only place that has a self-depreciating attitude.

The Office is one of my fav shows, and good for Scranton; but none of this applies to the conversation we were having Mr. over zealous Omaha-boy...

Also, Omaha-boy, Indianapolis has 2 Fortune 500 companies, plus one that is barely hanging in there in neighboring Carmel. Could you also get your facts straight before jumping in?

For decades Omaha was as stagnant as a bucket of water, but within the last decade all of that has changed! Not only that, but the city continues to improve with projects popping up all over the place.

Is it so wrong for us as people with civic pride to want to rid people of the notion that Omaha is still fly-over country? It's not! It is a real city just like the greats, but on a smaller scale, which can actually be a huge plus.
I'd feel insignificant in NY or LA, or in a tiny town no one has heard of. In Omaha the city is just the right size, so that I can make a difference in my city without being drown out, and my city can make a difference in my nation if people are willing to hear us out.

I understand that often it seems that we may go overboard in promotions, but we do so in an effort to change opinions and pre-conceptions, not in an effort to annoy or turn people off. Would you suggest we not propose our city where applicable? Because that's not fair. We only want a seat at the table, but people are all to quick to dismiss our town becasue of their assumptions, not based on population or actual merit. (Omaha's city population is close to pre-Katrina New Orleans, and they would be taken seriously. Omaha is home to the tallest structure between Denver and Chicago, taller than any builing in nearby KC, and they would be taken seriously. Omaha would also be 1.2 million in metro population if it were connected to nearby Lincoln, driving us into the top 50 metro areas. I'm sure you knew some of this already, I just wanted to cover my bases.)

Point being, we want to be taken seriously and have every justification for it. Do you have another way to gain that status we should know about?

Open to all ideas!
Have you ever seen a commercial on TV that they play over and over and over again? Eventually, no matter how wonderful and glorious the product they're advertising, people just get annoyed.

I understand. I don't agree with GoNe's aggression, just don't ask for "suggest a city..." or something like that and expect Omaha can't jump in on it simply because it often does.

Go Ne, I appreciate the positive reinforcement. I'm becoming less and less enamored with my city the more browbeaten it gets, and it's nice to be reminded of just why I fell in love with Scranton in the first place.

To the others, I suppose I just feel like I get "bullied" sometimes on these forums. People constantly overhype Omaha (Go Ne), Des Moines (metro223), Chicago (steve-O), New York City (FutureCop), Louisville (censusdata), along with many, many more, but while those all seem to slide by without a complaint, my threads about Scranton always seem to tick people off. Is it really the city that draws people's ire, or is it resentment towards yours truly? Most cities on this forum have their well-known "cheerleader." Don't get worked up just because your own cities don't.

but yall take it overboard with Scranton and Omaha and fit it into any and every post you can, even if the post was about cheeseburgers you would find a way to mention your cities.

You cant overhype Chicago and NY cause they are all-mighty cities in our country,no where compares to the 2.

and the people from Des Moines and Louisville dont promote their city as much as yall do,not in the same way and no where near as much.

Im not getting worked up on here cause my city dont have a cheerleader promoting it every chance they get,I know my city is growing and in my opinion is perfect, so I dont have to prove to people who think its just a sleepy small poor desert city that its not, I'm happy so thats all that matters.I guess were just too laid back here in the Southwest to care about impressing the rest of the country.

Ohh boy. Yes, you can overhype them. The may be world class cities, but that doesn't mean that they're a good fit for everyone.

But seriously, can we please just let this thread die?

In case no one's noticed, this was started over a year ago. I don't know why it was even bumped in the first place. Lets all stop fighting and just let it go.

population of individual counties in Omaha metro and how much they grew by
from 2000 to 2006 and projections to 2011. It lays out the job growth here and by what categories... And what to expect in the next year 2007

I don't know about all of you, but I'd like a survey that doesn't say "funnest".

Bismarck, ND is really good if you want a very chill lifestyle. The only time traffic is hectic is when the old person in front of you thinks the speed limit on the 40mph road is 25. There aren't any clubs, but there are a LOT of bars. We have walking/bike trails going everywhere in Bismarck and Mandan. No matter where you'd move you'd have fairly easy access to them, and they'll take you wherever you need to go. I like the laid-back lifestyle here, but I personally want to experience the hustle and bustle of the big city. :S
