Juarez Mexico(pop.1.4million) finished the year with a little over 1,600 murders while El Paso I think didnt even get into the twenties.

I'm surprised Tucson had 74. I thought it was more in the 20-30 range like Austin

I don't know about Atlanta but its murder rate has been on the rise for 2006 and 2007 so I am not expecting much better for '08.

Can't find the crime statistics of any particular city in Australia, but across the country we apparently have had an average of 1.5 murders / 100,000 people not including car accidents from 2004 onwards.

Wow, that's even worse than Tijuana, and I thought that was bad. TJ also had their most violent year with 843 murders, and 2007's total was 337.

Tijuana's bloodiest year

Overall I think this was a horrible year for Mexican cities. Nuevo Laredo had over 200 murders per 100,000 people at one point. 41 Americans went missing in NL and the violence is starting to spill over to Laredo, TX. The Mexican drug cartels do horrible things that most American gangs wouldn't even think of. They burn people alive in gasoline and torture you. This all just convinces me more that our country needs to crack down on illegal immigration.

tahiti, have you checked NJ.com? I saw Jersey City's stats in a story in the Jersey Journal. There is a robust discussion of this year's JC crime stats on JClist.com.

Tucson has some pretty rough areas. I surprised at 74, as well. Hopefully that number will go down this year. Whatever tactics Austin's PD is using to keep murders down need to be adopted by other mid-sized cities, like Tucson.
