I just got off the phone with the local police department. For some reason the 2008 figures won't be released until March. I don't know why it takes so long.
But in 2007 there were 28 homicides in Knoxville (pop. 180,000).
Rural Knox County (pop. 240,000) had 6 homicides in 2007.
So all of Knox County (pop. 420,000) had 34 homicides in 2007.

Interesting that the veteran homicide detective attributes the decline in the murder rate to the EMS and their medical skills. Not something I was aware of or would've thought to be an issue.

Even though 34 for 420,000 isn't bad at all I really thought Knoxville was even safer than that, more in the 20 range. I'm guessing most of those are on the East Side?
