"The North" refers to everything north of the I80 and east of the Mississippi.
In a word, civilization.
To that end, I voted Chicago, but NYC and Philadelphia are also favorites of mine
I really regret never having found a chance to live in Philadelphia.
North of Interstate 80? Are you kidding me? Interstate 80 is far from being geographically central. It is among the northernmost east-west interstates in the United States.

i back this up....NYC, Detroit, Minneapolis for me on this list, but i also agree that we should have left NYC out of it

This is too arrogant and blatantly ignorant to respond to, but oh well, I have nothing better to do.
Culturally, I-70 is a better divide between the north and south, but many places south of that can still be northern in culture. The old Civil War division still works reasonably well when talking about cultural differences.
My favorite northern city is Minneapolis. So far, it's the most civilized large city I have been to. It's too cold to be anything but civilized... which is a good thing.
I wouldn't call I-70 a good dividing line either, because half of IL, IN, and OH lies below I-70 and was never considered "Southern" at any point in history.
Now as far as the cities go, why not include New York in the poll? Isn't New York big and Northern? I'd rather see a city like New York in the poll than Indianapolis, which no one would probably vote for.

Most of the Southern half of Missouri is also very culturally mixed and was never definitively Southern at any point in time.
I put Denver but I don't really consider it Northern at all. In fact, it's more Southwestern than Northern. Denver's kind of a category of its own.
