Any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated. We are going up north, then down, so, so far we have decided:

Cleveland to Chicago, then Madison (or Milwaukee), then St. Paul to visit the Mall of America, then no real destination until Seattle (going through North Dakota, Montana, and Idaho), Portland, then the rest in California: Redding, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Monterey, then Los Angeles.

What time of year are you doing this? There can be treacherous driving in those northern states well into April.

Actually next week. Treacherous driving to the point where you could not make it? I would think here in Cleveland the winter is as bad as it is anywhere else, and as long as you drive responsibly, it's not really a problem. Would you recommend taking Route 66 instead (going south rather than north)?

You could possibly be stopped by highway closures at this time of year. Because those areas west of Minnesota are lightly populated, they don't get a lot of publicity when highways are closed for hours or days for winter driving reasons. Check out these state transportation web sites for details.

Wisconsin - http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/...nter-roads.htm

Minnesota - http://www.511mn.org/

North Dakota - http://www.dot.nd.gov/roadreport/roa...reportinfo.asp

Montana - http://www.mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/scrip...etailed&box=No

Idaho - http://hb.511.idaho.gov/main.jsf

Washington - http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/

Washington state in particular has had some terrible weather lately. Flooding rains all along the coast, heavy snows in eastern Washington. Seattle even had a record snowfall in the past week.

Take a look at these mountain pass webcams in Washington to see the driving challenge you'd be facing there.

FYI, Mall of America is in Eden Prairie, MN...other side of Minneapolis from St. Paul

Yeah, it's really rough out in the Northwest right now. The Washington DOT had to close I-5 yesterday between Portland and Seattle - a 20 mile stretch. All of the East-West mountain passes are or were closed, including I-90 East of Seattle.

Regardless, it sounds like a great trip. I have only flown across, but would love to have the luxury of driving at least once. Have fun!

Yeah we're going to be leaving in the next few days, and still debating going north or taking the classic Route 66 path. We're still very much in favor of going north, not only because no one thinks we'll make it that way, but because we're dying to see specifically Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco, before we arrive in Los Angeles.

Going through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona isn't nearly as appealing as us as going through Wisconsin, Minnesota, Washington, and Oregon.
