California is liberal and it has a Republican governor. States aren't 100% blue or red. In fact, going by the election results below, Colorado voted blue more than other known democratic states.

Yes, that's true of this year past (2008). We're very independent out here. You never know what will happen. I have said that many times over. We were called "red" when the state barely went for Bush over Kerry.

I think the thread specifically mentioned liberal states. None of the ones you listed are liberal--not by a long shot. In fact, all of those states have implemented pro-growth, low-tax economic policy that frustrates liberals who want to pour money into unions and robust social programs.

Colorado voted for a Democrat for the third time in 50--count 'em, 50--years. It is famous for it's low-tax, pro-business economic environment.

It should be noted that some struggling or less fortunate states have a strong (mostly recent)Republican tradition: West Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.[/quote]

Louisiana is socially red, however the state government and what people expect from the politicians is liberal spending and higher taxes. The state has a long way to go before it is considered business friendly, That is the real reason this state is losing population, not really because of Katrina.

A note to the one whom calls himself 'bigdave01' and others. what high cost of living are you speaking of? i live in cali. and for what i pay in just home rental costs, i could buy a home in my home state of michigan in a great area for a pittance.more than enough to make up for heating oil, by the way, which most homes in these cold areas do not use..heating oil is used mostly in rural areas.the majority of people now live in sub-burbs or urban areas in the states you speak of and heating oil is high even in good times, so i dont get where you are getting your info. and high cost heating oil { which you can say thanks' to republican leaning politicians who cater to the fuel and energy industry like carp feeding on dead meat} would not cancel out the savings on food, housing, clothing and other amenities that one can get in these great states.buying a home here in sac-town is also much cheaper than renting at this point because of the sly-deals { Theft } from banks and other lenders holding forclosed mortgages and lowering property values and hence lowering the huge tax base that was once available in this state { by the way: this all happened under a republican governor and a republican president}. heating costs will not convey any generalities of cost of living in the context you speak of. michigan has lower food costs, lower housing costs in all areas, etc. fuel is also cheaper. so to, are a college education. to just make up, out of thin air a reference such as a higher 'cost of living' and higher 'heating costs' only means you have not educated yourself on what the 'whole' cost of living index is and all of its variables and what they really mean.one can never use any one formula for this calculation..unregulated industry standards and wall streets 'legalized gangsters' have caused this mess with the backing of a republican party that looks more like a nationalistic, racially tinged nazi vision of the very people who embrace their policies { politicians reflect their -base- constituants} after all, this president is being thrown under the bus by those who claim a socialist takeover agenda -for cover- while really playing the race card..this is all interwined with this presidents race more than anything.combine this with greed from large deep pocket corporate lobbyists and the god, guns and patriotic themes of the I love "my' country crowd and we have a nationalized and one sided party of flakes and nuts who have admitted that they want this president to fail..Thats real patriotic and mighty white of you..Oh, and mr steel says thank you massa! this recession/depression has largley afflicted mostly poor whites {whites actually make up the bulk of those who are poor by the goverments standards } and blacks and hispanics the most-'thank you mr reagan for your unflattering and destructive act of deregulating wall street and big industry.not to mention the missiles you gave the iranians while in office by proxy through the contra costa rebels.im sure they were appreciated and will be much more so when they are actually used against us when we invade them because they have a few too many milking cows in the pasture! republican presidents propped up saddam hussein { including many other dictators} and built the very military might that we went to war against in iraq.for no reason..how many of you 'real republican' parents out there are really proud and happy that your sons and daughters died for no reason? thats right! no reason at all, other than ol georgie boy wanted to avenge his daddy-whom by the way was never in any real danger- by sacrificing your child. the one you love dearly and now will never see again.and would you feel the same and would you still send them off to a made-up war knowing what we know now? is your childs life worth a politicians lies? I think I agree with the above poster. It's a lot of words though, haha. But he's saying what a lotta people are thinking.

I live in the liberal of the liberal states, Massachusetts, and our ecnomoy is just great. It's been better in my short life, but everything sucks right now. We still have one of the lowest unemployment rates, and one of the lowest foreclosure rates. I met one person who was laid off, and she was from Connecticut.
Our cost of living is higher, because, there are a lot of services provided by the state that aren't provided by other states down south/west for example. We have the best public educational system in the country...it ain't free, but the up front cost means Massachusetts stays on top and attracts high-paying jobs.

Everyone who lives in Massachusetts in all likelihood can afford to stay here.

that's a lot of points and little spacing! awesome!

Oh hey guys, I made another topic and it has a general trend of "overall" liberal states actually getting the least back for their contributions to the federal government while the the "overall" least liberal states get the most federal spending. That kind of sucks!

Arizona's economy fell off a cliff and it's pretty much a low tax, low regulation, all republican, socially and fiscally conservative state by a majority, and always has been.
