In my city I would suppose one of the biggest events is Common Ground Music Festival, another would be lighting the states capital christmas tree and all the other plan events that happens during that day. If sports count, it would be worth mentioning Michigan State University sports teams, such as football, basketball, and baseball which draw thousands ( including newscast) to the stadiums.

Well, I live near Baltimore and DC. For Baltimore it would be the annual Preakness. For DC (where somethins always going on) Obama's election was probably the biggest event in recent times.

The only thing I can think of at all in Kansas City that attracts a bunch of people is the St. Patrick's Day parade downtown.
