What's a nice place in the southeast to just relax with great scenery and peace?

Another city would be Charleston, South Carolina. Further south in Florida you might want to hit St Augustine. Perhaps combine that with the sea islands of Georgia.

If you like camping and hiking maybe check out the Great Smokies in North Carolina or the Chattachoochee National Forest in Georgia (less crowded than the Great Smokies).

Are you speaking of a visit or to live there?

For a visit, I recommend Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee (has cabins on the lake) on the Cumberland Plateau or the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, both in May or the latter part of October.

If you are speaking of a place to live, we'd have to know more about what you like to do and whether or not you are tied to a job in a particular location.

The OP said "Small-town" getaway. I wouldn't consider any of those except Madison to be small towns.

I'll recommend:

Clayton GA
Black Mountain NC
Boone NC
Waynesville NC
Greeneville TN
Jonesborough TN
Rogersville TN
Tellico Plains TN
