Would lean towards NC. I've run into a lot of Wisconsiners (don't know what they call themselves) who've move to where I am currently, and they seem to have a weird and cold attitude. I didn't notice that when visiting NC.
NC for sure. Cary is one of the safest cities in the country and i think teens can get more out of NC than WI. With great colleges nearby and the proximity to the beach NC will be a big hit with your family.
Umm -- i think Madison has a great college nearby. As for raising kids and education, Madison has traditions of both liberal and conservative political thought well represented in the community. Madison, in summer, has beaches right in town. I doubt if any Carolina city is safer than Madison.

Weird that you would categorize all Wisconsinites by that. Is everyone in Colorado just like you, or are a few, maybe, different? Looks like Wisconsin ranks higher in education, than NC, as well, for those speaking of NC's educational advantages.
They are both nice places to live and raise a family. Madison is beautiful but it is way too cold in the winter (for me anyway). Right now Madison is -7F and Cary is 16F. You can probably expect a 15 to 20 degree difference between the two from December through April.
Some people mentioned the culture shock of moving to the South. NC can be very southern, but Cary doesn't feel southern to me and the whole Raleigh-Durham area is much more diverse both culturally and politically than the rest of the state.
People, this is a zombie thread nearly 11 years old. The nice teenagers mentioned in the original thread are not only out of high school but probably out of college by now if they went. And the OP may even be starting to plan retirement, depending on their age when the post was first made.
Both are great states, both towns are nice cities in nice states. North Carolina is beautiful, mountains and beaches, nice Southern state. Wisconsin..... northwoods, lakes everywhere and of course Lake Michigan. Midwestern to the core, very clean.
It all comes down to preference, like winter? In Wisconsin you better like it or you will be miserable there. Midwestern living or Southern living?, all personal preference.
