Vegabern, reading your comments stirs a lot of confusion in me as to why you still live here--nearly every bit of input I've personally ever seen from you is snark-laden criticism in some form or another.

I'm also highly suspicious that you may not possess the kind of worldliness that would allow you to be throwing these kind of stones, but then again, if memory serves me correctly, you grace us from back East.

Well I live right next door in North Dakota and the fact that ND ranks at number 3 doesn't surprise me. I've met and talked with lots of North Dakota natives and I can tell you one thing, they have common sense and what I would refer to as street smarts. From my understanding, IQ does not measure book learning, but native intelligence and the ability to 'figure things out'. A person could stack degree on top of degree and NOT have a high IQ. North Dakota is one of the most rural states in the country so when people express the opinion that rural is synonymous with dumb this is complete bunk.

I suspect that Montana people are a lot like North Dakota people and it doesn't surprise me that Montana scores high on this list. Perhaps when you live in a climate that is cold and harsh a good part of the year, intelligence is needed to survive.

I knew by looking at the title this would turn into a north vs. south debate. Wouldn't be the General USA forum without it.

I know what my IQ is - and I've lived in the South most of my life. My parents and ancestors are from the South as well. I'm pretty pleased with our IQs and our overall intelligence. That's really what matters most to me.

Yes, I'm aware it's not quite fair to compare a state like Montana or ND which are mostly white to heavily minority areas like CA or even TX, but whatever.

We're a poor state, and we don't get enough taxes to pay teachers well. Many good teachers know that they can do much better in another state and pack it up and leave, and all that are left are the ones that got their teaching degree from the discount community college across from their house. It can be improved once we start getting people out of welfare and into jobs. Then they'll pay taxes, then we'll have revenue to spend on education, then we'll maybe not be 50th in line. By the way, not everyone in Mississippi is a complete idiot.

The differences probably have more to do with migration, than with the natural intellects of the natives. Most people with high IQ acquire high levels of education, and migrate to the states that have more opportunities for well-educated people. Once they have made that migration, their children are also residents of those new states, and carry the high-IQ of their parents.

Indeed. I keep saying that and everyone carries on as if it is for real. There is no academic study to back it up and there is no link in the original post to a credible source. City-data fails the IQ test. Some people will believe anything they read.
