NY would be a lot higher if it weren't for the bad sections of NYC which really bring it down lol.

Massachusetts is number 1. Not a shock. But keep in mind these are just averages. There's a narrow range of IQ's on this list and there are smart and dumb people in every state.

haha true, but presumably most states can say that too! E.g. Cal wouldn't be as low without most of L.A., Oakland, etc.

Yeh. Also, Mass is TINY it's kind of hard to compare it to huge states like Cal and Tex, which each have little enclaves of highly intelligent (parts of Bay Area in Cal or JPL in socal, all the high-tech stuff in Texas with NASA , Texas Instruments, etc.) but also vast swaths of poor minorities and rural people.

Population-wise, Massachusetts is big, especially for a state that size. Montana is huge but has a low population. I think the factor that makes Massachusetts smart is the number of colleges. There are a lot of colleges in a small state, so no matter where you are in the state, you're near a college.

Compared to mont. its population is large, but even in terms of # of people its tiny compared to Tex or Cal

I agree - it really is like one big college town! Boston U, MIT, Boston Coll, Harvard, Wellesley, U Mass, etc.

I'm assuming the number on the right is the average for the state.

It is so shocking to me to see where Missouri lies on this list, as it is to see how LOW the average IQ is. Boy, the dumbing down of America really shows.

No doubt the Kansas City metro brings the entire state of MO down a notch. The people in rural MO seem more intelligent than those I've encountered in the KC metro area.
