Syracuse, NY area would definately have suburban areas in your price range and even lower. Good schools and safe. Actually, Clay, a suburban town just north of Syracuse was voted one of the safest towns in the country. Check out homes here:#1 Syracuse Real Estate Website | CNYREALTOR.COM Go to Onondaga County and put in your criteria.

Try Virginia - we live in the South West area - the crime is very very low and is a good place to raise kids. If you like mountains and scenery you would definitely like it here.

Good idea.

Roanoke especially has a strong arts community, even though it's a relatively small city. But the home prices and crime meet the criteria.

It is my moral obligation to point you towards Louisville KY or adjacent Oldham County. Why??

1. Louisville offers one of the best restaurant scenes, park systems, best road systems (with very few traffic problems), hip urban areas, all in a scenic Kentucky setting for very affordable prices. $150,000 gets you a nice 3 br house in a ultra safe area with great schools.

2. Louisville is one of the safest cities and metro areas in the US. There were 403 violent crime acts per 100,000 residents in 2005; compared with rates of 720 for Philly, 712 for Houston, 494 for Atlanta, and 441 for Columbus. http://www.morganquitno.com/met05a.pdf

3. Since you want something suburban, I'd recommend Oldham County. It has the state's best public schools

Louisville and Lexington look like two really nice areas that are on the rise and could explode. Nice pictures.
