I'm a 31 year old bass player currently in Thailand. I used to live and play in Cincinnati and will be moving back to the US in less than a year. I would love to join/start a funky rock band. There is some pretty good funky music in Cincinnati but, you can only go so far in a place like that. I would like opinions on which city has the best local funk music scene outside of NY or LA. Should I just move back to Cincinnati? That is where Bootsy Collins is from after all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is room for a funk band in lots of cities, but I cannot think of a single city that has what I would consider to have a funk scene. I hear a lot of musicians talk about moving to cities with a big music scene (think: Austin, TX) only to learn that the market is saturated and it can be hard to make a go of things. Cincy might be a good place to start for you based on your familiarity with the city. It can help getting gigs when you have a connection or two at the local clubs/bars. If you find Cincy to be too small, Chicago and Detroit are not that far away.

Places like New York and Los Angeles have all types of music. There's funk, but there's pretty much everything.

New Orleans, Louisiana is where you want to go for funk.

Doesn't Austin, Texas have a rapidly growing funky music?
