These photos are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for posting them! I'm actually very surprised with Richmond---it's a very historic city with what appeared to be a modern skyline. Most historic cities with glass high-rises downtown clash rather horribly, but this doesn't appear to be the case with Richmond. I love all of those brick, Federal-style buildings throughout town, and I can't wait to visit someday. I think Richmond is a very overshadowed Southern city---I know most people in PA think of VA now as being simply the rat-race Loudoun County/"NOVA" area, even though the vast majority of the state remains non-Yankee turf. Once I'm financially-secure enough, I'd love to visit many historic Southern cities, including Richmond, Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans, among others.
Let's all take the time to photograph our beloved hometowns. BellaFinzi has done so with the Syracuse, NY area, and she was my inspiration to do the same with the Scranton, PA area. Now Vasinger has posted some wonderful photos of Richmond, VA. We need more enthusiastic photo-journalists to come forward---we now have nearly 70,000 members on this site; surely more than just a handful are photographers, right? I'm dying to see a native Pittsburgher post some photo tours of urban neighborhoods in the Steel City, much like I've been doing with Scranton's neighborhoods.

There were some beautiful plantations in Northern Virginia that were sadly torn down in the name of "progress". NOVA is mostly subdivisions, strip malls, and disgruntled government workers.
Once you get past Fredericksburg, things do quiet down a lot. Richmond is actually a relatively small southern city in comparison to Nashville or Atlanta, which both to me didn't feel very southern at all.
I love Richmond. It still has that old South feel, while at the same time is surprisingly right cosmopolitan and modern.

Lee and his father (Lighthorse Harry Lee) helped fight for our independance, then Rob helped lead states that wanted to tear it apart. Great guy!
