Do you ever feel like you were born in the wrong place? (fit in, home) - General U.S. - City-Data Forum

I do ! I grew up in Northern Virginia, and while technically its the South, the area is no longer very Southern at all, and I always felt I wished I had grown up in at least Richmond or somewhere further South.

Growing up, I always felt so much more Southern than those around me. I loved sweet tea (my mother put it in my forumla as a baby!), and fried okra, grits, collard greens, and of course spoonbread.

I love Loudoun County, but its soooo transient! Everyone doesn't say hello very much these days. I always almost felt like I was a Deep South person livin' in border town ! I have a very strong Southern drawl, and most people even from the Deep South ask me where I get it.

Mostly its from my older relatives in Tidewater Virginia. But anyways, I felt like a fish out of water in transient, plastic, Northern Virginia. I wished I had been born in the 1800s in the Deep South!

Well, I'm glad I grew up in the NYC area--I wouldn't have chosen any other place in the country. But if we're talking outside the US, I kind of wish I had grown up in Germany. Just have some strange connection to there. I think I had a past life there, lol.

Absolutely not! I'm a native son of Brooklyn, NY. If I have a little extra hometown pride, well, sue me. But I wouldn't trade the word "Brooklyn" on my birth certificate for anything.

Yes. I've lived in New England all my life. A lot of people here seem content but I have no desire to remain here longer than I have to. I should have been born in the Sunbelt.

I can tell from your previous posts that you want to be Southern so bad and you try to let people know how Southern VA is.

anyways where I grew up is where I consider home and I wouldnt trade it for nothing, I lived the conservative small town lifestyle and thats how I will end up living again more than likely, Im a small town boy at heart.

I am already a Southerner, but I wanted to be from the Deep South.

I grew up in Chicago, but never really felt like I fit in there, even though I enjoy visiting there now. When I moved to Dallas (high school years), I enjoyed it a lot, but it still didn't feel like home.

Austin was very fun during the early 90's but I get a weird vibe in the Central Texas area (kind of creepy vibe). Maybe it's the bats or the strange events that have occured there throughout time...Luby's Massacre - I was down the street when this happened, Branch Davidian Compound, UT Tower Sniper, best friend drowned mysteriously)... and then I moved out West.

I think my personality fits better w/ people in the Western US, but I truly feel at home when I visit Europe, even though I have never lived there.

When i was visiting Las Vegas, I felt like I belonged in the southwest. It's not that I felt like I fit-in, it was a different feeling. It's really hard to explain. But then when I got home to NY, I realized I would miss it too much lol. I don't know, it's confusing to me. I don't know what I'll do 30 years until retirement. I have time to decide

Yes!!!! I have always felt out of place in South Florida and can't wait to leave. I felt a real connection to Boston. I have traveled all over the world but I have never felt about anyother place like I do Boston. It's actually kinda strange lol but I feel like I just belong there. The first time I visited, I went off on my own like I just knew the place. I have taken the T from Harvard Square to far out on the Blue Line at 11:00 at night and felt(maybe foolishly) totally safe. I cry when I leave to come back to Florida and I hope to be relocating to New England in the next year. I just do not fit in here in Fl. I never have. Take care everybody!
