Though I'd likely never live there, after visiting several cities on Alaska's coast a few years ago I'd have to give them the nod.

The entire west coast and Hawaii.

Anything from the Big Sur coast through Oregon and up through Washington, just beautiful.

Don't forget the "middle" coast either. I have been to the East Coast from Nova Scotia down to Florida, around the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Galveston, TX, and the West coast from Seattle to LA. I still prefer the coastline arounf the Great Lakes. You can go from Sugar sand beaches to rocky, rugged coasts. Sheer cliffs that fall into crystal clear fresh water and long beaches that are so clean they "sing" when you walk on them. The state for me that has the most beautiful coastline it would have to be Michigan and it's 3000+ miles of fresh water coasts.

1. Alaska
2. California
3. Washington
4. Oregon
5. Florida
6. Maine
7. Hawaii
8. North Carolina
9. Michigan
10. New York or Massachusetts

I considered the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes also in this (including Lake Champlain - the "sixth great lake"). Also intense beauty matters (Hawaii) but sheer size does matter alot!

I've just got to put in my 2 cents for the Oregon coast. We've got lots of trees and empty beaches. Some places you can go to the beach and look down it for miles. You'll still see nothing but the ocean and beaches. A few places it gets rocky1. It makes an interesting trip to drive up 101 from Brookings to the top of the state.
