The original question is an interesting one. Years ago (say at least 6-7 years ago and before that), I used to get Canadian or other foreign currency change maybe once or twice a year. However, I don't think I've gotten any foreign currency change in the last 5 years or so, or if I have it is happened at most once or twice.
I definitely have noticed getting foreign currency change in stores by accident is much less common than it used to be.
Believe it or not, here in Texas I've gotten more Canadian money than pesos in my change. I've gotten a British penny once before, and I even received a 1-Euro coin in place of a quarter(score!).
I live in Orlando--I see foreign coins all the time--Canadian, Bahama's, and others

that would be a keeper! Canadian money in Texas? I have never gotten a 1 Euro coin before!
Like many posters have mentioned, it seems more rare today. When I was growing up in Seattle in the 60's and 70's it was common to get Canadian coins. Most were treated as equal amounts. Today, it is much more rare. The obvious explanation is the exchange rate, but maybe there is more to it than that, such as banks ridding themselves of the coins. Not sure.
