With the popularity of Honey Boo Boo, there is a chance the Southern accent will expand (and not talking about Mama's dress size either).
No offense but to be honest i feel most people sort of mock the people on that show to varying degrees, as opposed to wanting to emulate them.
It's like the whole jersey shore subculture syndrome its fun to watch them but no one would admit to seeing the characters as people they want to imitate (no one intelligent at least).
Young southerns don't seem to have any less of accent than the older southerns do. It sounds just as thick to me, or at least I think so. My young cousins who live in rural South Carolina have a very thick southern accent. Another cousin of mine who is 11 or 12 has developed a very heavy southern accent since moving to Georgia about five or six years ago. It really sounds like he's originally from the area. My aunt and uncle (his parents) have developed one too but not as heavily as my cousin did.
An uncle of mine's fiancee's two daughters have a southern accent and they're from Mississippi. These two daughters are under 25.
Maci from Teen Mom (who's 21) has a heavy southern accent and so do some other young southerns I've heard on TV.
However I think Californians have the plainest accents and people from Boston have the most annoying ones.
I don't have a problem with the generic northern accent. I have just never been a fan of hearing the NCVS. The vowels just sound so extreme to me. I'm sure people would say the same thing about my accent though.

What is so extreme about the NCVS?
