I have these discussions with my husband. He only counts highway driving time. My clock starts when I'm backing down my driveway and ends when I emerge from my vehicle at the destination.

In my driving world there's construction, lanes closed, accidents, weather, congestion and on a 5 1/2 to 6 hour drive, I have to get out of the car at least once.

Woah, I'm surprised you havent gotton a ticket

First of all 5 hours from NOVA to NYC.

Richmond is 2 hours from NOVA 7 hours. Depending on traffic. Last time I went to NYC from Richmond, it was close to 8 hours!

I cant believe anyone getting from NOVA to NYC in under 5 hours. I drive usually about 70 MPH.

If you really want to live in the South move to Atlanta. But face reality -- Richmond looks like Hartford in many, many ways.
Are you kidding?? AT-lanta is NOT Southern!

Richmond is more Southern than Atlanta on any day of the week.

Richmond looks nothing like Hartford. It looks more like Charleston or Savannah.

Atlanta is even worse!

Default Has the North Moved South?

When I was in school Virginia was not called "Mid-Atlantic". It was part of the Southeast or South Atlantic States.

This was in the 80s and 1990s.

Now its called Mid-Atlantic- sometimes they include North Carolina in that as well. Sometimes Virginia gets lumped with with the Northeast!

Kentucky seems to be able to stay in the South for some reason- even though its on the same lattitude as Virginia, so you'd think theyd put Virginia in the South as well.

Anyways, I have heard Richmond refered to as the Mid-Atlantic region, which years ago, was simply not the case. And even Raleigh and Eastern NC.

Then by the time you hit SC you seem to be in the South. But the Mid-Atlantic banks run into SC. Which confuses me.

So when did they start calling the South Mid-Atlantic?

Its confusing to me. I always was taught the Mid-Atlantic was PA, NY, DE, AND NJ.

I'm not sure about Virgina but North Carolina is still run by good ole gals and boys to a large degree. It is changing but not the way you would think. It is overrun with mildy conservative transplanted soccer moms. These people are usually far from liberal types. They tend to be apathetic if anything. They are not making the case for progress. It is a one step forward- five steps backwards deal.

The triangle was always more liberal than the rest of the state but it has been flooded with so many sprawl loving momsters that it is actually losing some of its progressive edge.
This is the truth!

I think you're either a nut job or a troll who needs to go join another forum either way.

The South usually votes Conservative/Republican (Sometimes "Southern Democrats_ but those are few and far between today). And the South in general has different issues that matter to them. More about Religion, and Freedom of Religion, small government, etc.

But I dont want to get off subject, lol
Wtf? Northerners are elitist when you're the one going around saying how some states aren't "southern" enough and can't be members of the "Southern Club"? Give me a ****ing break, dude.

You just want the south to be conservative, and you think that anything that's not conservative isn't southern. Southern culture is NOT about being conservative or liberal or having a certain type of political views.

Yes, exactly. What does any of that have to do with politics?!?! I'll answer that question for you. IT DOESN'T!

Actually, quite frankly, if you really cared about the south you would want "national health care" since the south has the highest percentage of people without health insurance, who badly need it.

I have lived in the south all my life and I agree with DeaconJ that the south has its own unique culture that is evolving and should not be like the south of 100 years ago. Otherwise we'd still be lynching black people?

So basically you just think all metropolitan areas are automatically not southern?

Nice.

The North is still the North, and the South is still the South. But the twain have met, LOL.

Not compared to Richmond, or other Southern cities I have been to. Atlanta is Southern-Lite at best. Most of the suburbs remind me of NOVA or Fairfax County.
