I know there's lots of variable factors that can go into this but I think the most important thing is that the one bedroom is still in the city proper and not in some distant suburb.

Almost none. Houston has 10 current listings under $1,000/month…in a city of 2.3 million people.

If you limit yourself to sub-300 square feet and in an old building, Chicago and Philadelphia would have a small random assortment too.

Kind of funny how on Instagram you see all these apartments close to the $1000 range in Houston but I think they’re a lot of Texas realtors on IG trying to get attention from tenants by showing wrong apartments. For example the price they show ends up being really for the studio or the price is just your portion of the rent in a shares apartment with roomates.

They exist in Baltimore. Whether you want to live in those areas is another question. And even then you are talking about 10 listings for a city proper that is half rundown.

I’ve seen a ton of that on Instagram in Houston. They’ll show the units that are 3-4k and very luxurious with beautiful views (floor to ceiling windows) and say 1500 knowing damn well 1500 will get the 400-500 sqft studio in the building. It’s just flat out misleading.

It's in the bad neighborhoods.
But still possible.

A lot of good deals are through word of mouth, or by oldschool landlords who still use signs and phone numbers.

Looking on zillow, I see a few.

DC has a few. But mainly studios.

In declining or stagnant cities that are not "economic hotspots" or "job hotspots" in the US.

Look in these cities--

Cleveland, OH
Dayton, OH
Akron, OH
Toledo, OH
Detroit, MI
Flint, MI
Peoria, IL
Rockford, IL
Chicago, IL - some parts that are not great, or declining
Louisville, KY
Memphis, TN
St Louis, MO
Jackson, MS
Erie, PA
Charleston, WV
Wichita, KS
Shreveport, LA
Montgomery, AL

Cities like this--that aren't on the national radar and are declining with population, or just stagnant with development.
