It's been a while, but Darien Lake, which was owned by Six Flags at one time, is a good spot. It's in between Buffalo and Rochester. Welcome to Darien Lake!
There's Sylvan Beach, a small lakeside amusement park on Oneida Lake. It's in between Syracuse and the Utica-Rome area. The Sylvan Beach Amusement Park
I also used to go to the Enchanted Forest Water Safari in Old Forge, which is in the Adirondacks. Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York’s Largest Water Theme Park, Old Forge NY, in Adirondacks, New York Amusement Park
Here are a few others, that I haven't been to yet, but plan on doing so in the future.
Seabreeze Amusement Park - Home
Roseland Waterpark
The Great Escape (This is also in the Adirondacks)
There's also the State Fair in Syracuse too. The Great New York State Fair :: August 27 - September 7, 2009 :: Syracuse, NY
Here's another spot I used to go to, when I was younger: Marineland Canada
and another one close by: Home | Great Wolf Resorts
Lastly, a lot of people from my area go here: Canada's Wonderland | Canada's Premier Themed Amusement Park (Toronto)
and I have to go here with the little ones this summer: http://www.sesameplace.com/sesame/pa/index.aspx

Saw that their season pass was for 45$/50$... Not bad. Kings Dominion was about 75$ the last time I checked.

Yup, Upstate NY is not expensive living, but some people get scared because of the taxes.

When I was living in Waco,TX we use to go to Sixflags over Texas a lot. That park is so overrated to me now. I wish they'd get some new rollercoasters and more shaded areas. I guess since I use to go like 3 times each summer, it just got pretty old to me fast. For it to be the first Sixflags park, it sure is lacking behind the others.
