Nothing. Its amateur day. Lots of people who can't hold their liquor will be out and about. Not to mention all of the 3rd generation Americans claiming that they are Irish. Here's a clue: if the extent of your Irishness is wearing a dropkick murphys shirt and drinking guiness, you're not Irish.
In college I could deal with this day but the older I get, the more annoying it is.
Also, keep in mind that the mayor's last name is Driscoll, the county executive's last name is Mahoney, and the county sheriff's last name is Walsh, as was the last name of a long time area representative. So, the Irish-American influence is strong here.
Here in St Paul, there's a big St. Pat's day parade downtown, where they close off several blocks of a couple streets. The city's Irish-ancestry families march together as groups under banners proclaiming their surnames. Lots of people go on pub crawls, green-dyed beer is readily available, and the city buses are free that night. Imagine being a St. Paul bus driver on St Pat's day after the bars close!
Being new to denver I am excited to see this very large parade they have downtown. They say 200k people showed up last year and its suppose to be the largest west of the miss river. Never experienced that before in a city
My Gaelic football team will be walking in our local parade and then sipping beverages afterwards watching the ceili and seisuns.
