Wilmington, DE - it's near where you want to be! (that's more for living, though; you'd fly into nearby Philly.)

San Francisco:
10 minutes to Oakland
45 minutes to San Jose
1.5 hours to Stockton
2 hours to Sacramento
4 hours to Fresno (I'm guessing, never been there)
5 hours to Reno
6 hours to Los Angeles
8 hours to San Diego
8.5 hours to Tijuana
Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Seattle and Salt Lake City are probably all in the 10-15 hour away range. I've never driven to any of them though.

I live in the Quad Cities in Ia. & Il...from here Chicago is 2.5 hrs...St. louis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Madison, Omaha, Lincoln and Indiana are all within 4-6 hrs. Within 12 hrs is a whole gang of cities closer to the east coast and cities like Denver. You can be close to New Orleans in 12 hrs.

Albuquerque is all by itself really, but...
Denver - about 6 hours away
Phoenix - about 6.5 hours away
Salt Lake City - about 9 hours away
Las Vegas - about 6.5 - 7 hours away
Dallas - 10 to 12 hours away
To me, these are not bad (long) trips - but it's most likely because I've grown up here knowing 'if I want to drive to another city, this is what I have to do...'. People from the East or more populated areas probably think the above times are insane.
Note - I would not drive to one of these places and drive back the same day. But I don't think any of the above drives are too long. But we all have our own opinions.

What is considered driving distance?
I wouldn't really think a place 9-10 hours away is driving distance.
anything over 8 hours and I'll fly.

Cleveland is within 600 miles (e.g., 10 hours) of about half of the US population (including NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, DC, Baltimore, Atlanta, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, Indy, and St. Louis).
