One of the blessings of having the US Interstate Highway system is being able to quickly exit the state of Mississippi on a cross country trip.
They are a century behind in every aspect.

Virginia is nice but most south state look the same. Minus florida. Charleston and savannah are prolly the nicest in the south... other than miami beach

Probably TN. Rugged terrain, great fall weather, and the fact that it's home to the JD headquarters certainly doesn't hurt!

It's no worse in Mississippi than it is in much of the Florida panhandle.

One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen is Tennessee but I don't know if I'd want to live there. For living, probably Virginia.

Generally I would say the following:

Cost of Living: Tennessee > Virginia. But seeing you're from New England, Virginia may be cheap for you.
