Population is distributed evening across the state, not 1 or 2 metroes that dominate.

Maryland is probably my 2nd favorite, then NC. I also like northern Alabama and Huntsville a lot
Uh oh...

I would have to go with NC. Has Raleigh and Charlotte. Has the RTP which is arguably the best research area in the whole of the south, one of the best in the country I would also say. Growth is steady and will be a place that you are glad that you bought into looking 15 years down the line. I have also heard decent things about their beaches, the Smoky mountains, Asheville and even Greensboro.

Either Louisiana, Alabama, or Mississippi. Out of all the Southern states, these seem to me to care the most about preserving their culture, if for no other reason than that they're seeing generally less rapid influxes of population than Texas or North Carolina.

Favorite to Least Favorite

1. Louisiana- Most culturally unique
2. Florida- Tropical beauty/amazing beaches
3. South Carolina- Very laidback and gentile, Charleston is great
4. Georgia- Want to explore Atlanta, Savannah and coastal Georgia was charming
5. Tennessee- Nashville is one of my favorite cities of all time, really did not like Eastern Tennessee though
6. Texas- Lots of great urban centers, booming economy, interesting history, regressive politics is the downside
7. North Carolina/Virginia- Don't intrigue me as much as the core southern states, I do like that they have great universities
8. Mississippi/Alabama/Arkansas-Haven't explored them enough to make a true judgement

Virginia - As for all-around natural beauty and American history, it doesn't get much better than VA. From the majestic mountains, lush rolling countryside and good beaches. NoVA offers an above average urban experience with top-notch amenities.

Georgia - Much of my love for GA rests on metro Atlanta. Nevertheless, the state has great natural beauty, history and some pretty cool towns & cities. For me, Georgia's a fine alternative to Virginia.

Texas - Scenically, far from my favorite, but it's true that Texas feels like a whole other country. The place grew on me. Really liked how urban options are pretty much spread around the state with Houston, DFW, San Antonio and Austin. Nothing compares to this outside of California and Florida.
