Not from what I saw. Dallas and Houston have among the more notable downtowns in the United States...very clean, large, and new and they are booming....i would not expect them to be anywhere near as rough as any downtown areas in the Midwest.

Virginia...you have it all-southern hospitality, beaches, mountains, cotton fields, plantations, cypress swamps, rivers, lots of woods, good hunting and good fishing.

My favorite is South Carolina. I love low country cooking.

My personal favorite southern states are Tennessee and North Carolina and Louisiana. Tennesssee and North Carolina and also Virginia have the most scenery, and Louisiana in my opinion has the richest culture and best food.

North Carolina: it feels a whole lot more free spirited than either Virginia or SC.

I am really ashamed of you Vasinger for not including West Virginia in your poll. After all, West Virginia troops (including a lot of my relatives) saved Lynchburg from being burned by Gen. Hunter. And we don't hold any grudge at all against Gov. Letcher sending us one lone Colonel to defend us against McClelland and 20,000 Ohio troops.

I plan on moving from Chicago to either Alabama or Tennessee. I want to get away from the population density, heavy traffic, fast pace and get more in tune with the natural element. Any idea on which state would be better?
