LOL can't disagree with there being paranoid freaks in Berkeley. I have gotten this a lot living here but it seems like I've gotten it almost everywhere generally if you smile at people they tend not to smile back for whatever reason but a lot of southern californians are the worst they give you a horrible expression or if your just passing each other walking and your looking straight foward they will stare you down walking past which I cant figure out because I never had this problem in Nor Cal only down here and NYC.

I would never live in California. I want to visit, but I'd never live there.

Not really true. In Texas we're just friendly and we smile anyway (). If you have an exceptionally discontent expresion (), we simply ask "what's wrong?"

-Californians
- Texans
- Floridans
- "Northaners"
- New Yorkers
- the rest of the country

from reading your posts you'd like the northwest too. but not if you don't like smiles at all... The smiles in NorCal are usually genuine, the scenery, natural beauty, and weather just put you in a good mood. They are actually genuine in difference from just being polite like the south I know you are talking about. Kind of like the mediterranean in Europe where people just seem to enjoy life more. There are many studies out that say weather has big effects on personalities.

Again Texas is like that too.

But I guess Texas isn't really a part of "The South" either....

You better be careful. Before you know it, some California guy at Berkley will say it hurts the environment to frown. They'll form committees and establish frown-free zones. Then they'll develop an education plan around it and little kids will have to read a book titled something like - Timmy Lives in a House With Two Frowners. Then maniacs will crawl out of the woodwork and want to start taxing and regulating facial expressions when they aren't confiscating your Ding Dongs and checking your light bulbs.

The Governor will then ask for federal taxpayer money because he overspent on the unionized frown police, frown education programs and the California Bureau of Facial Expression Enforcement and Education.
