To the liberal mindset, traditional roles and values are to be evaluated based on whether the practical benefits outweigh the cost of freedom. In this case there's a great practical benefit to having a father.
But some tradtional values are to be moved away from. A cursory glance at history gives a number of good examples.
Tradition =/= good.

Because of divorce 50% of kids are being raised without fathers. Years ago couples used to stay married for the sake of the kids. Do you advocate going back to this "tradition" too? Were these kids better off having married parents who did nothing but fight?
I know this is OT but it is relative to the OP. In both these instances, kids are growing up with "single" Moms.

Some years ago a local paper had a series of articles on single welfare mothers. At the time the Bush Administration was pushing them to get married as a "solution" to welfare. My state had a program of welfare to work. The article interviewed several of these women. One woman had a 2 year old son. She said the father of her baby was a drug addict who couldn't hold a job, was in and out of jail, and beat her. She said she made stupid mistake getting involved with him and would make an even bigger mistake if she married him. So, she enrolled in this program and learned to become a plumber.
I cannot remember the time frame on this, but she was making $45/hour as a plumber, had gotten married to another plumber who adopted her son, and had just bought a house. The other women (all trades people) had similar stories.
Do you think marrying the father of her son would have been a better solution? There is a saying that any man can be a father, but it takes somebody special to be a Daddy. I think perhaps that man she married who adopted her son, will be a Daddy to him.

If that question is targeted at me, then I think you've misinterpreted my position. Of course no dad is better than an irresponsible dad, and I never said anything about staying married for the kids. It's just a better situation for a kid to have two caring parents, married or otherwise.
