When I was in Atlanta I didnt hear all that many Southern accents, not that I was really listning but its just that it didnt pop out to me, I did hear some though, some mild and some strong, to me the Black people didnt sound different and dont have the kind of accents that stand out, maybe this is why it didnt stand out to me, the same in Birmingham also, I mainly talked with AA's though and didnt spend all that much time there to really find out about the Southern accent, I would have liked to spend more time if I could've.

now in Amarillo,TX you hear that twang til your ears hurt
