Well...the list has some major flaws but I greatly dowbt Denver is above any of them. Maybe if you made a list of financial centers in the Mountian time zone...

I was joking. But Guernsey? Jersey? Denver is the financial center of the Rockies!

Well okay, I'd probably put Denver above those two.

A lot of those cities you've 'barely heard of' are actually tax haven/shelter islands in the English Channel. Obviously this list is skewed towards the UK (with the exception of London), but Denver? C'mon.

Here's another list based off of the same study that's slightly different - only NY and Chicago (#2 and 8, respectively) in the top 12, with Tokyo at #9.

St Louis is sometimes referred as the financial center of the midwest.

I think it's safe to say that Chicago is the financial center of the midwest with Minneapolis being second.

Financial Related Jobs as of Jan. 2009
Chicago - 306,600
Minneapolis - 139,000
St. Louis - 78,600

They are referring to the fact STL has 4 large influential companies that are known across the country. CNBC does daily reports from at least 1 of the companies each day. STL has a larger concentration of brokers than any other city outside of NY.

Out of curiosity, where did you find these numbers?

Here's the link: http://www.bls.gov/ro5/

From there you can go to the Economies At A Glance section and choose state employment information. You can then find metro area employment numbers.
