As for science, you have got to be kidding. It is called the Research triangle for a reason. True scientists don't have to lose their morals to improve life in the world.

Absolutely.

I will say, as one that has spent the vast majority of my life between the epicenters of evangelicalism (Dallas and Tulsa) that there is a huge nominal (Christian in name only) sector in the South. (I have also spent time in the Deep South, with the exception of Alabama, and I've lived on the East and West Coast.) I personally believe that it is the large number of unregenerate folks in our churches that tend to be overly offensive to outsiders from the North, West, and Midwest. Hence, they are puzzled at our way of life and how we relate to others that are from varying cultures.

I don't think I would go so far as to say that we are ahead of the North culturally, but one thing I do know for sure is that we are totally fine with our way of life in the South. The last thing any Southerner wants is some Yankee telling him how poor/miserable/backward his life is. Respect our way of life/culture and we will immediately return the favor.

While reflecting on which ones I held, I knew that most of it was probably wrong or at best inaccurate. Any truths? I'd love to hear from Southerners on what they think ... I want to keep an open mind and not believe the North would be better off without the South.

Note that I freely admit to holding some but those, as I said, were probably wrong and simply want to hear from some Southerners, on what they honestly think about their neck of the woods.
it is all true

Generalizations are just that, general. Sometime they come from nowhere, sometimes they are generally true, but , one should generally be careful about generalizing, and individuals often differ from the general population and sub-populations they belong to and can be offended by generalizations.
At least that's what I've generally found.
And generally, I'm right.
Or at least I choose to believe that.
LOL, generally you provide some excellent insights.

4NewAmerica originally said:

Northern liberals are just as rigid in their thinking as Southern conservatives. Basically, they're both wrong. Only we right-wing atheists are correct.

Wow. There is such a thing? What religion? The religion of logic?

But it is true that many of them are religious. My friends from the Atlanta area are very very religious, but luckily don't try to preach to me. Also, they don't tend to say what they feel to me all the time. I think it is true that us NYers are very open about the way we feel; whereas many people from the south don't always tell you. So, like someone had said, there are some truths about stereotypes.
And like someone else said, there is VERY LITTLE truth to stereotypes, because the overwhelming majority of people do not fit them.

People from the South very often tell you exactly how they feel...I'm pretty sure I don't hold back. If this forum would allow it, you would know even more clearly how I feel about you.

people are stupid everywhere, some tend to live in one area of the country over another, this can be seen in statistics (education, health, crime, religious vs. secular, etc.) as well as experienced living and traveling around the region for awhile.

LOL no way, it isn't in that sort of way.

And trust me, had this been in person, I would clearly tell him how I feel about him. My problem is that I'm not afraid of anyone. I step up against people in the street in the south Bronx where I work

Oh believe me, I'm holding back.

Some of these people need serious lessons in tolerance and manners. I blame their parents.
