I'm not talking about economic observations, I'm wondering more about personal things such as accents or a certain state of mind.

Well according to some none of us have the privilege of knowing anything about the "real" America.

Since I can't tell the difference when I walk from Chicago into Oak Park, I don't see how you can say that those in Chicago live in a big city and those in Oak Park don't. You have to consider the metropolitan area, and in fact, 45 million people live in the top 4---New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas. A hundred million people live in the top 15, and almost half the population of the USA lives in the top 50.
