I do not think there is really a stigma anymore. At least not like there used to be. Can you please explain your justification for the claim that most white Americans have a Native or African ancestor?
If you can find it, check out Scientific American magazine from December 2003. Here's some more information to check out:1/3 White Americans Have Recent Black Ancestry « The Postnational Monitor (http://pmsol3.wordpress.com/2007/07/25/13-white-americans-have-recent-black-ancestry/ - broken link)
Part Choctaw from Mississippi and supposedly a little bit of Cherokee, but I think it would be Lumbee now due to the surnames in my family. What's ironic is that there are probably Blacks and whites in that state that are related through Native American ancestry since both have mixed with the Choctaw there.
I wish I had more Native American ancestry. I myself am about 25% Aztec, but look totally Spanish and a little French. I'm sure there used to be a stigma about being Native or part Native, but as far as my experience has been with my age group, it is often admired to have that kind of ancestry.

I have Choctaw as well. It is on my mother's side of the family, in Louisiana. You might have a point about some blacks and whites being related through Native American ancestry.
Yes, My Great Grandmother was Cherokee and Creole.
