Back in the 1800s KC was very rural compared to Stl. During the civil war it was nowhere near as populated as stl. Many of todays neighborhoods in KC are built on the grounds of former plantations. Hence why they supported the Confederacy in the area. Read up on the Battle of the Hemp Bales that took place in nearby Lexington MO. A lot of men poured in and joined the Missouri State Guard.
Of course KC today just like most other cities like Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, LA have lost most of their historic image due to being delutted by immigrants and from people from other parts of the country. Most people don't care about the past anymore.
same with St. Louis Has most of an East Coast feel to it. Totally different from it's southern image it had leading up to the civil war.
