Just a bit ago, I was walking around my yard with my daughter's teacher, showing her around when she says "oh, there's a snake" totally like no big deal. I asked her what she thought it might be and she didn't know, said maybe a water snake but then she mentioned that she has water mocs in her pond, just up the road. I thought we didn't have those in this area (Roanoke area) ...I tried to get a good look at it's head without being all up in it's face and it didn't appear to be triangular, but then I'm horrible about that, I can always sort of make out a triangular shape out of non-venomous snakes,lol...so, what do you think it might be?

But the scales do seem different in jaggedness.

I think that is a water moccasin. We had a very similar looking snake in a house we were renting a number of years ago. It became extremely aggressive when we put it out, striking at everything within it's reach.

Here is a link to a page with a picture of a know water moccasin that also looks much like your pic. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_b39XBpGROi.../Moccasin2.jpg

The head is round and there doesn't appear to be a ridge or "pit" above it's head, so most likely it's a common Brown Water Snake. They can vary in color and can get VERY large. While not poisonous, they are somewhat aggressive and do strike pretty easily if disturbed.

Google search of some pics - HERE.
