I would say another very beautiful area that offers tons of outdoorsy activities is the west side of Michigan, specifically Grand Rapids - Muskegon, or even as far north as Traverse City. The housing market is coming down and will be affordable very soon (if it isn't already). Only draw back is the job situation.

Considering it's a large metro area, Charlotte is a good area if you like the outdoors. There are lots of parks/greenways, a 850+ acre park/nature preserve in east Charlotte and a 1100 acre one to the north, two large lakes, the U.S. National Whaitewater Center, Crowders Mnt. and Kings Mnt. State Parks, the high mountains 2 hrs. west/NW, beach 3.5 hrs. east/SE. Nice sunny, 4-season climate.
