Though some would call it dull because there was limited ethnic diversity.

In 1960, 89% of America was White. (9% Black and 2% everything else). When I grew up in the Midwest in the 1950s and 60s I never saw any minorities, everyone was White. While life was not perfect, it seemed like people mixed better with each other back then because more people came from the similar backgrounds.

I now live in a City (Annandale VA) that is more like a United Nations. Our High School has people from over 50 different countries and there is some racial tension. I would not say there is alot of conflict but more isolation than when I grew up. So many people come from different ethnic backgrounds and speak English as their second language so they tend to only socialize with people from their own countries. Though exposure to people of varied backgrounds may have advantages.

I am not talking about liberal thinking or acceptance of gays, or people who chose an alternative lifestyle. I am talking about race (ethnic diversity) only. I think it is possible for a City like Spokane to be tolerant but not diverse but a City like Annandale to be ethically diverse but isolating and rigid.

What is a better type of community to live in, a place like Spokane, WA-- where most people are White, or Annandale VA where we have a United Nations of races and White people like me a now in a minority.??
Better: diverse ethnicity
More Comfortable: single ethnicity

I lived in a town in Chile that was not ethnically diverse, everybody except me was Chileno. I lived on a small island in Indonesia, where everybody was Indonesian. I lived in a large city in the Middle East where everybody was Arab, except a few dozen "experts" from developed countries working for NGOs. The lack of ethnic diversity did not really appear to have any negative impact at all on the way of life in those places.

In fact, I grew up in a town in which there was not one single resident who was not white middle-class Christian, although there were no doubt a few people of Native American ancestry, who in those days would never have admitted it. Maybe that accounts for my failure to have socially evolved.

I wouldn't mind, as long as it's a peaceful town.

I'm fine with ethnic diversity, I don't need it but it is nice to have. It means great food and cultural opportunities.
However people should not look down on cities with more than 70% white people, there's many different cultures in ethnicity within "white" alone.

70% white and probably a nice safe area to raise kids.

I personally don't like how were trying to turn everywhere into this cultural salad bowl. It used to be New York and California that was considered the multiculutral areas in the US. Then it moved to the large cities and capitals within the states. Now it's leaking into small town america.

I personally prefer to be around people that share a lot in common with me. Not the exact same but kinda close. I don't think I could live in and area where the culture was a complete 180 from me. I would feel like and alien. And that's what I felt like when I visited south florida awhile back. It's very latin america influenced. Fine to visit and experinece for a short period, but I couldn't stand living in such and alien environment for long.
