Default Is I-10 safe to drive on near mexico u.s. border?

Moving out to CA and was going to take i-10 from FL...but kind of concerned with going through the jaurez to tijuana area along the i-10 border... need to get up to a little north of SF... would I be better off taking a more northern path on say highway 40 or 70?

I-10 is just as safe to drive as any other interstate roadway. You need to plan your route and do get up to I-40. Once in Barstow California, you need to take Ca Hwy 58. What that will do is take you in towards SF.

Here is my would be routing from Tampa, Fl I-75 north to I-10 west to Marrianna, Florida. go north on us hwy 231 to Montgomery, Al then onto i-65 north to Birmingham, Al, Once there get on hwy 78 west to Memphis, Tn. At Memphis, Tn get on I-40 west all the way to Barstow, California. At Barstow, Ca take Ca Hwy 58 to Bakersfield. At that point the choice is yours as to how you want to go, Ca Hwy 99 or over to I-5 to SF...

I drove truck for a few years and have driven towards Bakersfield/Madesto from Florida. Be sure to check my routing out in a map so you know what I just typed.

Have a safe and fun ride out west.

It's not like Mexican drug lords are going to snatch you out of the car and mug you. El Paso is actually one of the safest cities in the nation.

how is highway 78 through memphis??? thanks...just mapped it looks just as close mileage wise and probably a bit more scenic than that huge gap of nothing between houston and el paso

I assume this way is also faster because you don't have to go through houston/new orleans/ san antonio/el paso/phoenix/inland empire traffic as you'd inevitably hit a few of them at rush hour...?
westerner92, well we are going to have a car full of stuff w/ out of state tags ... just taking precautions and also looking for a less monotonous route.

I hate you. Here's why:

1. You're moving to CA
2. You're driving across I-10 to get there.

I am so very, very jealous of both of these things that I hate you for it.

OK, I don't really "hate" you, but I'm very, very jealous and I wish I could do that sometime soon, lol.

I hope you have an awesome trip, I can't imagine how it would be anything less than fun. I-10 is an awesome route, and what better destination than CA!!!

Grapico, U.S. 78 from the MS border to I-240 runs though the seamier side of Memphis. But I wouldn't worry. If you want to eat, just stop at a well-populated restaurant.

Actually, I've always thought that U.S. 90 from San Antonio to El Paso is a more scenic alternative to I-10... And Judge Roy Bean's place at Langtry (near where the pecos River crosses U.S. 90) was a neat place to stretch your legs for a little bit.

You should have no problem. I've driven I-10 all the way from Florida to Arizona, then drove to San Diego on I-8 and had no issues. There's plenty of cross country traffic from Truckers driving from the South to the West Coast.
