I always try and use them as a courtesy to other drivers. In fact, I will often leave my signals on blocks if not miles before I actually have to make a turn. This serve the following purposes...
  1. It saves me from having to turn them on later, "a stitch in time saves nine" I always say, tho I think people tire of me saying it.
  2. It acts as a reminder to me that there's something coming up that I'm suppose to do.
  3. Providing I have the correct one on, if I see something at the last moment on that side of the road I can just crank the wheel to that direction with virtual legal immunity. "Hey look! Is that a quarter?" or..."Oh yeah! I need a toothbrush!"
Makes me glad we have a way of communicating with the other drivers out there because there are a lot of crazy people to watch out for.
