My family and I are interested in moving to the U.S - but where???

We are after
Big city feel
Culture that is friendly but also entrepenurial, vibrant etc.
We have kids in primary school.
We love the beach, want to be close to it, want to live an outdoor lifestyle.
We are not rich, but not broke.
Looking for city that is growing, not a retiree city.
Looking for a place that is culturally proud and that the US is proud of (this may sound dumb)

BUT, i can't work out your cities, there are so many. If I think of big cities like NY, MIami etc....but then there are little ones like St Petersburg etc.....is there are way to help me define a state and then Major city (then I can work out the smaller cities). Here we have one city per state and then lots of suburbs, but i think you have lots of cities and lots of suburbs.

Thanks for any help, I realise this is a very broad question.

Chicago maybe. There are beaches on lake michigan. i think evanston, which is directly north of chicago might be a good idea. It's upper middle class, but certainly not rich, and has Northwestern University, one of the best in America. Chicago has it's own culture and i think seems proud to be American.

Oh, i saw that you are from australia, so yes it's going to be cold. Maybe philadelphia. It was America's first capital, is big but not huge, close to the Jersey shore and NYC.

It sounds as if you want a reasonably priced, big city, mild climate and on the coast (I do not like Lake beaches personally). The first city that comes to mind is Seattle, Washington.

Big City, Safe, Clean, Great Outdoors options, located on the coast, Good schools. You could also look at Portland as well.

If it were not for the request of a lower cost of living I would also recommend San Francisco. Also if not for the weather I would also think that Boston would be a great recommendation for someone like you.

You could get a 2 bedroom apartment in the outerboroughs of NYC for that budget.

Someone mentioned that Seattle was wet and cold? Or am I mistaken. But I have heard Portland is nice too.
