Why are the traffic lights in the U.S. not automatically, like those in Europe?

For example, it's red traffic lights when there are no cars or pedestrian. It's just waste of time and gas! Why can't they be automatic so they turn green automatically until a car comes. Are there any states/region that has automatically?

It depends where you are. Some cities and states have traffic-sensored lights, some don't. But they do exist all over the U.S.

Yeah in areas where it's only busy for an hour or for special events when the rarely get used. Then you will find out you can stop 15feet short of the light and watch it turn automatically b/c that's where the sensors are.

as the others have said, there are many places in the US where traffic lights are run off a sensor.

In my town, many lights rotate automatically until late at night when the major road will always have green unless a car arrives on the lesser toad.
