I agree that the crime rate is very important. Where I live there is very little crime against strangers. I would not, could not live in an environment where I was fearful all the time. But then again, I lived in New Orleans in 1984, and people were being killed for their groceries, and I was never fearful. I have driven through the seedy areas of Kansas City though and was very much afraid.

The other thing is that I would never live in a college town where the college was the number one economic indicator. I've done that before and I hated it. I'd much prefer to live where there is no college even near by.
