I've grown up in the midwest my whole life, but I often get the impression that people don't like it that much. It's not like I have a chip on my shoulder, but it seems like the midwest, overall is maligned more than other regions. We're the "rust belt", boring, with bumpkin-ish people, the land is boring etc...

So why does the Midwest get a bum rap from so many people--or is it just in my head?

People either want the beach or mountains, and most of the midwest really has nothing to offer there. I personally love the plains of the frontier strip states, there is always something there all you have to do is look for it.

Because people are stupid and believe what they hear instead of what they experience.

Just wait. A think a lot has to do with where people think is the "in" place to be. Once the West and East coasts get so overfilled and over populated that they are unliveable anymore, everyone will be heading YOUR way. Count yourself lucky for now.

Most people think of the Midwest as flat, landlocked, and boring; but this is not true. We have several mountain ranges, including the Appalachians in Ohio, the Porcupines (Porkies) in Michigan, the Ozarks in Missouri, and the Black Hills in South Dakota. We also have more coastline than the west or east coast, with the great lakes. Specifically, Michigan has mountains and beaches, but is often overlooked because it's NOT on one of the coasts and has a temperate climate. If Michigan was next to Florida or California, it would probably be a huge vacation spot.

Also, most of the Rust Belt is NOT in the Midwest! It stretches from the East Coast through the Chicago area, and most of it is in the Northeast.

There are a lot of people who need constant stimulaton to be entertained. They don't understand that somepeople don't need this to be happy in life.

It's like they like their produce, beef and pork but don't want to think about where it comes from.
They tend to look down on the people who are actually responsible for the bulk of these items.
It's not cool to work with one's hands. It's sooooo beneath them.

It's "cool" and "hip" to live on the "coasts".
