New Orleans has a high cost of living? I thought it would be more on the affordable side.

Costs of housing, rent, insurance, utilities, etc. has gone through the roof since Katrina.
I know it's not NYC or SF high, but the same apt that would avg. you $475-$750 a mo. in Houston or Atlanta will go for $950-$1250 a mo. in New Orleans. The suburbs are a little cheaper, but not by much.

I agree with you on all of these except. I would add to the dislikes is the lack of culture...ie museums and art type things to do

Even worse I just read that one of the 3 people that run the Downtown Arts District had to step down today due to the recession and thus, lack of funds, leaving only 2 to run it. I haven't gone to their events, but in a recession like this the first thing people do is cut spending on the arts. Orlando needs that new arts center, which looks totally amazing and will be a world-class, technological marvel if and when it is built. That will surely inject some life into the dance companies, philharmonic, and theater. Also, Orlando needs a monthly art walk that is held on a weekend night rather than a weekday night, in Winter Park or Downtown...offer free wine in each gallery like they do in St. Augustine on first Friday ArtWalk. I could see Orlando getting into that...anything with alcohol will get people to come out. A major museum would also be nice, but I don't see that happening now since they are backed up already with all the stuff they had planned before the recession.
