Who thinks that Indiana was "Stuck in the wrong region"?
I am from Indiana and have met people from Chicago and other northern states and cities and lots of them have told me that Indiana was "stuck in the wrong region" or "stuck in the wrong place" because they think we have a southern accent. What do you think? (This thread is only for people who have actually been to Indiana and are not just stereotyping it)

I spent my summers as a kid at my Uncle's house in Hammond. Maybe some people consider the southern part of the state to be the South, but the northern part is most definitely MIDWEST.
No, it doesn't belong in the South. Geesh. It borders Lake Michigan. How can that possibly be the South?

I've noticed that people usually say that when they go to states or regions to the south of them, even if it isn't entirely true. Yes, Indiana does have some Southern influences, but it's by and large Midwestern. Just because Indiana "isn't like Chicago" doesn't mean it's "stuck in the wrong region."

Indiana is about a Midwestern as it gets. For better or worse.

Only the very southern part, north of the river seems slightly southern, but not by much. Its is very midwestern.

Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois have southern cultural influences, Northern Indiana and Northern Illinois do not. It is pretty much that simple. I've been to southern Indiana, and I definitely see the southern influences down there in speech patterns (but the same exists in southern Illinois).
Perhaps some people might be responding to the more conservative leanings of Indiana over some other Great Lakes States, but that, I believe, is more because Indiana is more rural (other than the northwest corner) than most of the other Great Lakes States, so it stands out a bit.

that doesn't make it southern. Besides, what peple say is not necessarily what they DO.

I think Indiana sits perfectly. It has the influences from the Midwest, The North,Maybe a little east and from the South. Indiana is crossroads for these cultures. Indiana perfectly blends them together to form such an amazing and spectacular state. Filled with open minded, friendly and caring people. Indiana is at the crossroads of this great nation of ours when it comes to commerce and culture.

It's very clearly a tropical state, much like Hawaii.

Indiana is definetly NOT TROPICAL!
It gets warm for a few weeks( up into the high 80's low 90's) in late June through July but thats it. It's mainly in the 60's and 70's here for Spring and Fall and in Winter it can go months before getting above 32. How is that tropical?
