SC is the most Cali-like state, IMHO. Mts in one direction, palm-lined beaches in the other. Substitute hurricanes for earthquakes and brush fires, but only toward the coast (they tend to parallel the coast, not come inland much). The white folk are very much like Californians from decades ago. The state is 1/3rd black but they are concentrated along the I95 corridor and downtowns. There are many counties which are 80% white.

I lived an Cali as a child and have always wanted to live in a place like that again. SC may be my destination. I want to have a Cali-modern house and a high mileage car so I can go to the beach or mts whenever I have the opportunity.

The state's unemployment rate is high but is dragged down by the poorer counties. It's average in the better counties.

North Carolina is pretty great. But, yeah, California seems to be imploding right now. Three families from that state have moved into our neighborhood in the past year. They all clawed their way out. Now at parties, they'll stand around and talk about how screwed up California is.
