Something in the continental US, not totally remote in the boonies, reasonable access to supplies or services. Enough land to have a nice garden and some privacy. Earnestly looking but don't have a lot of cash. Doable?

OK, the half-acre requirement can go out the window if there is a decent-sized backyard for a garden and some privacy from nosy, noisy neighbors -- old trees screening the house, etc.

Home can need some work, but must be in livable condition while work being performed.

But the neighborhood and/or area must not be in an economically devastated area nor in an area overrun by drugs, crime, etc. - other things that run down home value and make a neighborhood frightening to live in.

Anyone?

Look at you typical Huber or Levittown 'burbs around our midwestern and northeastern cities. I know that price range should be easy to match in Huber Heights, Ohio, outside of Dayton.

That sounds like my suburb of Syracuse, NY. You could find something that around here. Here's some examples: Moderator cut: real estate links

I just bought almost that exact thing where I am now, except it is in the nicest section of town and ran 85,000. Just out of town it is easy to find 1/2 acre and a decent house for 75k. Where? West Michigan. Nice growing season a huge number of fruit and veggies are grown locally all up and down the State so whatever you don't grow yourself, you can find.
