I like self service. I prefer to fill up the car myself and avoid the higher costs with full serve. I would use self serve even if full serve was the same price, but I've always been the kind of guy who preferred doing things for himself.
I remember when self-serve gas came to Illinois in the 70s sometime. There was a difference of 3 to 5 cents per gallon. I'm sure now the difference would be much greater. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a full serve gas station in Illinois in years.
There are plenty of people who have moms that will go out of their way for full service gas stations.
This reminds me of the time I was in Kentucky, and there was a gas station that had full or self serve gas. One time, I was on my way to work and the self serve stations were slammed. No one was waiting or using the full serve pumps.
I waited 10 minutes for self serve.
So, after having given it though, I too would drive out of my way, or wait longer for self serve. I have voted accordingly.
Why do people think full service costs more?? In NJ, despite having full-service, gas prices are among the lowest in the country (low fuel tax).
Cheap gas which someone else pumps for me sounds good to me.
Gas is cheap in NJ. We always would fill up in NJ in our travels. Actually, the stations on LI which were full service I found to be cheaper than the self serv. Again, I think it had more to do with the expense of the self serv pumps as opposed to paying an attendant and having him use the hand held credit machines.
I was thinking the same thing. Whatever gas is the cheapest and the closest is what I go to whether full or self serve.
