You need to get out more. The West is way more rural than the South.

Not sure how there is even a debate. If you have been out west away from the couple and a couple isolated big cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver... there is nothing. The population density in places like Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana... is crazy low.

Where are all the lights? That gives you a pretty good idea where all the people are.

The West/Mountain West is by far the most rural area in the country. Down South is pretty rural, but it's not nearly as isolated as states like Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Utah, Arizona, etc

Yea, but you've obviously never been out West...if you ever go West, you'll see that it's much more rural. Some of those states are absolutely empty.

The West is by far the most rural. However, parts of the Midwest (ND, SD, KS, IA, NE) and South (OK, western TX) come close.

Default Wilderness is not rural.

This is what I am thinking.

Because if some posters think that unpopulated = rural, than Alaska is by the most rural area, when in reality Alaska it is not mostly rural, it is mostly wild.

To me, the word rural means farmland and small towns. Its not just empty land but a CULTURE & a way of life. Think Tom Sawyer, Mayberry, Little House on the Prairie etc.

Like you find throughout the country, but especially on the Great Plains of the Midwest. There is low population density on the Plains, but still more populated than the huge government lands of the West.

The West has large areas of rural land and tiny towns of course, but alot of it strikes me as more "wild country" than true rural land. Some of it not just wild, but outright WILDERNESS. And I think that is a good thing for the West, which makes it a better place to live than other areas.

So for me, I think the areas with the most true RURAL areas are
1. The Midwest
2. The South
3. The West
4. The Northeast

Alaska and The West easily win in the wild and wilderness categories.
