I don't know I think we need moderates. I think we need people who are calm and try to make peace between warring camps. Who reject extremism and its vices.

In part of the 1990s many things seemed too moderate, but now I think we need a strong moderate element. People willing to say to the world "I'm not really mad at all and I'm going to get me a frozen yogurt!" People who frown at the overuse of the words "fascist" and "socialist." Who wear sensible shoes and rarely get excited. The men and women who dare to be mild.

It's partly inspired by a sketch Robert Guillaume did on Saturday Night Live way back when. He'd been called a "moderate black man" so he really ran with the idea.
